THE STORY

Objective

When Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) embarked on finding new office space in New York City, they found alignment with landlord SL Green at 220 East 42nd Street, the historic News Building. Beyond designing a functional office, SWA sought to create a low-carbon, sustainable, accessible and healthy workspace for their team to collaborate and innovate. SWA worked closely with SL Green on the layout, materials, and systems used for the 28th floor build-out. What remained was the challenge of furnishing the space. That is where Rightsize stepped in to complete the vision.

Design Solution
To align with SWA’s roots in sustainability and accessibility consulting, the design team at Rightsize embraced a holistic approach to reducing the project’s environmental footprint while maximizing ergonomic comfort and usability. Refurbished cubicle workstations dramatically reduce up-front embodied carbon, and all new furniture was sourced from manufacturers known for their low-impact and sustainable production processes. In the spirit of reuse, some existing furniture in good condition was repurposed from SWA’s old office and integrated into the new design. Height-adjustable desks, thoughtfully arranged workstations, comfortable seating, and hybrid spaces for both collaboration and individual focus reflect the latest thinking in worker well-being and workplace productivity.

Desired Outcome

The completed space reflects more than just a place to work – it places SWA’s commitment to sustainability, accessibility, and innovation front and center. By blending sustainable new furniture with repurposed materials, the design minimized embodied carbon and environmental impacts. The hybrid design supports the changing dynamics of work, ensuring a seamless transition between remote and in-office settings. With its clean, modern look and eco-conscious ethos, the new office meets the team’s operational needs while embodying the company’s core values. SWA’s NYC office reflects Rightsize’s dedication to creating spaces that are good for people and the planet, showcasing that sustainability can be the foundation of both design and function.
